Harmony and Sleep

January 31, 20255 min read

We have started our adventure to create more harmony in our lives and as we do I become more aware of what can help create harmony and what can get in the way. Sleep is one of my first insights - the length of sleep, the quality of sleep, and the ability to re-energize. At “home”, we have comfort, we have habits, I have my waterbed and my favorite pillow that I love and so the only variable is how much time I allow myself to sleep. Now that we are traveling healers, I recognize how sleep is a piece of the puzzle to my sense of harmony and energy.

When we first landed in Sayulita, Mx we were happy to have a cute small apartment to call our own. Surprise – the bed is full size, and we are used to a queen. Both Emma and I are used to having some space to move as we sleep and on a full size that space is considerably reduced. We kept bumping into each other as we rolled over, thinking that the other had claimed the center of the bed, and not sleeping as deeply and comfortably. We are also used to the quiet neighborhood that we live in to sleep. Here we were on a road leading out of town with a speed bump, so naturally the trucks and motorcycles slowed down for the speed bump and then accelerated again all right under our window. While we enjoyed our stay there we both felt like we could use a better nights sleep to fully re-energize. “This is temporary” we told ourselves and we looked forward to our next lodging. We agreed to pay more attention to the size of the bed when choosing our next rental and to read the comments about noise complaints.

Our next stop was Guayabitos where we had a room rented in a travelers hotel. We walked in and saw a king size bed and we both smiled. We knew we would sleep better with more space. Then we laid down on the bed and learned that while it was a king it was also more firm than a futon. A stiff foam mattress on a concrete bed frame. The adventure continues. But by the third night we were both waking up in the morning stiff and a bit achy from how firm the mattress was. We decided to stretch more at night before bed and in the morning upon waking to help us adapt to the bed. We also got a massage, at $30 for a 1hr massage how could we say no. We were also at the end of a main street, so we still had some car and truck noise but less than before. We laughed together thinking how much we love our waterbed that we sleep on at home. How much we got used to it and how much we would miss it during our travels. Emma started thinking about this adventure, and was it worth it to abandon our comfy waterbed and sleep comfort to go explore the world? How would this adventure affect our health and vitality?

Our next destination took us to a small fishing village “where tourists don’t really go”. We found a really cute indoor/outdoor living space online and thought to give it a try. Arriving in the small village I started wondering what kind of accommodation we were really going to find. And when I thought it might be worse, it turned out to be better. A king bed, yeah!! And to our surprise it was comfy with soft pillows and a duvet that you could snuggle into. We thought we would get some good sleep now with a good bed and quiet surroundings. Only to learn that in small fishing villages the method of communication is often by loudspeaker. Vendors start driving though the village in the morning and announce their presence and their goods. “El gas, honk, honk(sound)” over the loudspeaker starting sometime around 7am. By this point we realized how important good quality sleep is to create and maintain a sense of harmony in ones life. When there is too much noise I’ve learned to sleep with the pillow over my head in such a way that the noise is less, but I can still breath fresh air.

If we want to have harmony in ourselves and our lives then good quality sleep is a piece of that puzzle. We knew that sleep was important for health and were reminded how mattresses, pillows and noise are keys to having a good night sleep. Do you sleep well? Have you looked into your sleep patterns? Are you comfy with your mattress, pillows? Over the years we have often recommended to our clients to look into and change their bedding and pillows.

If your sleep isn’t good, why not? If your sleep situation isn’t great then what can you do to improve it? Sleep issues can also come from worry and anxiety and have nothing to do with your pillow, your bed, or your neighborhood. If that is more of your problem then I encourage you to work with us. We are traveling healers and can help you move beyond your worries and anxieties to create more harmony in your lives with good quality sleep. An easy remote session can address your sleep issues and help you find solutions to help you recover your vitality.
